Under the Influence of the Placid Moon
9.75 x 16 x .625 inches, Mixed Media on Wood
The piece, with its surprising shapes, developed into an abstract, ethereal landscape or moonscape. I painted bronze with a palette knife. Then, I used it to mix with red, blue, yellow, and white to make tones and shades of harmonic complementary red and green colors. Purple and red add touches of bold color to the composition. I used a combination of palette knife and paintbrushes to move paint on the wood surface.
The piece tells a story about a world under the influence of the placid moon. The right, upper giant arcs in tones of red, bronze, and green act as parenthesis with the purple and bronze arc on the left achieving homeostasis. Holding the mountain in place are the pink waters in front of it and the bronze hills on the right. All is right with the world. The mountain shifts from being a mountain to being a house. Whether in nature or inside the comfort of our dwellings, we feel at home under the influence of the placid moon. An air of mystique foretells a mystical experience is underway.
When the painting was complete, a piece of dried acrylic paint that I had pulled off the plastic lying under my painting and a piece of red dried acrylic paint sitting on the table both became part of the painting. They knew their place on it without me having to decide. Distinct from the painting itself, yet harmonious with the whole, they add panache to this otherwise peaceful scene.
The reference to the natural world fits nicely into my body of work. Compared to my usual bold, bright, rich hues, the colors appear muted and subdued. In the evening, as the sun is setting, the bronze glows, creating a special effect on this painting.
