I began with bright green, bright yellow, and magenta to create this piece. The subject emerged as I painted spontaneously, using the colors I had selected.

The expression in this diptych was so different from anything I had done before. I did not like them immediately after creating them. They hung on the wall for a week before I could work on them again. And I grew to love them because they are so different.

The color palette was bright. Wanting to keep their bold essence, I worked to lessen the bright color palette. I used a palette knife to add texture and tone down the bright green at the top of the work. I painted glazes of less saturated colors over the bright colors.

Even though this piece is so different from my other work, I rarely paint figures; it fits because of its bold use of color and inclusion of the natural world.

The story behind the two pieces emerged with two unique, unknown heroes. They are powerful within themselves to conquer whatever life throws their way. They are resilient, remaining bright through it all.

I ask the viewer to pay attention to the figures. They maintain their appearance even if it means facing judgment. Their strange appearance led me to name them “Odd Fellows,” although I sensed their kind intentions. I discovered that there is a benevolent and fraternal secret society called Odd Fellows, founded in England in the 18th century.
