A New World Awaits the First Step

This painting was totally different in experience and expression than my last painting, Lantern Bearer. It began by effortlessly moving paint on canvas to create a background. It immediately communicated its need for ample space. So, white became very important after the initial mellow yellow stage, which I adored. Curvy gestural marks reigned supreme. A constant return to white was key. There are places where white on white became fun to see what would happen. Would it show up? It doesn’t in the photo. And you have to look for it in person, but it does. Images emerged. It feels free-floating to me, beginning at the top and tumbling all the way to the bottom with a soft cushion landing. What do you see and feel in this painting?

The painting experience was all about open space, mellow yellow, and white. It wanted lots of white, which creates space and room to breathe and roam. I hesitated when the painting wanted deep red. Giving in, it was exactly what it needed to add depth and grounding. The figure in the upper right seems to say to me, “A new world awaits your first step. What are you waiting for? Dive in. The journey is fun and full.”
